CASE STUDY 09Home insuranceSpecialty & manufactured homesUnited States

Most people here are not asking what it costs. They are asking whether anyone will cover them.

A US specialty home insurer asked us to read the market for insuring homes that do not fit the standard mould — manufactured and mobile homes, tiny homes and garden annexes, and rented-out property. We read the market in July 2026 through what people were searching for.

Two sets of questions, and the gap between them
A

What the industry is built to answer

  • How much will my premium be?
  • Which company is cheapest?
  • How much can I save by bundling?
  • What happens if I raise my excess?
B

What people in this market are actually asking

  • Will anyone insure a manufactured or mobile home?
  • Does a tiny home or a garden annexe count as a house at all?
  • What has my policy quietly left out?
  • Am I covered if I rent the place out?

Both columns are questions. Only one of them is about money.

What the searches are really doing

01

The first question is whether, not how much

Insurance marketing assumes someone is comparing prices. In this market, a great deal of the searching is people trying to establish something more basic: whether a company will take them on at all. Price only becomes a question once that is settled — and for many of these homes it never is.

02

The home does not fit the form

A manufactured home, a tiny home and a converted annexe are all houses to the people living in them. To an insurer they are awkward cases that may be classified as something else, or covered with quiet exclusions. People search to find out what their policy has left out — often after they have already bought it.

03

Fewer searches does not mean less need

Search demand fell by more than a tenth in a year, yet these homes have not disappeared. The more likely reading is that people are giving up part-way, or going somewhere the industry cannot see. A shrinking search market in a housing type that is not shrinking is a sign of friction, not of falling need.

So the first job of the website is not a competitive quote. It is a straight answer to ‘can I be insured, and for what’ — which is why the client now measures how many people finish a quote rather than how its prices compare. Answer that question and the price conversation becomes possible.
